So I purposely didn't print out the gallery guide or anything for this trip, I didn't want to have an agenda. God knows the rest of my life is scheduled down to the half hour mark - today I just wanted to wander and get to know the city again.
So a couple things about NYC that I had forgotten.
1. The smell - I'm not saying it's a bad smell, but it is a New York smell. A mixture of urine, human sweat, bus exhaust, cooking food, perfume from passers by, roasting peanuts - all of it kind of slams you in the face walking around, I remember that.
2. People are thin and mostly attractive - yes this is true. Could be because some 12 million people are squeezed onto this island, so space is at a premium - I haven't seen any sloppy-fat folks all day. And the thing about NY is a lot of models live here - male and female - you'll be walking and see someone who "looks like a model", because they probably are.
3. The city has changed, its is newer - when I lived here Times Square was not the outdoor mall it is now, and the storefronts off Bleeker has more mom and pop shops and less nicely designed store chains. The West End and Meat Packing district are beautiful, but less rough around the edges.
4. It is a marketing visual feast - everything here from design and advertising is pretty solid. From the environmental design of the store "All Saints" to the building-sized ads off 6th ave, there is always something to learn from and admire. I love it.
Ok done with my beer - more later.
